I’ll try to be more careful.
Replace try with endeavor and you get I’ll endeavor to be more careful. No one would say I’ll endeavor and be more careful, and yet you hear I’ll try and be more careful all the time. As far as I’m concerned it is not correct.
To me it seems that To try … always calls for a what?!, not an and... I’ll try the new car, I’ll try to drive (NOT and drive) the new car, I’ll try the cake, I’ll try to eat (NOT and eat) the cake. (Disclaimer: the last four examples are not necessarily semantically synonymous).
