In fact Pat sudden death is morte súbita, when there's a draw and before the penalties the teams play more 30 minutes (two 15 minute long half times-- the extention) and if one of the teams scores first they win...our team know this pretty well (I can't remember now but it was at an Olimpic Games). Mata-mata is indeed play off. Like our Copa do Brasil, it starts with 64 teams and after 2 games (or 1 if the visitors scores 2 or more goals than the home team) 32 advance and so on until we know the champion.

 

Pontos corridos; our Campeonato Brasileiro: All the teams play against each other twice, there is no finals, the one which has more points at the end is the champion.

 

Do any American sports championships work like this -- (American) Football, baseball...?
