The "pau-de-arara" was, of course, also a torture technique in the old days under the military. A prisoner suspended in such fashion was completely helpless and defenseless.
I believe the term is also used to describe a pole used on the back of trucks to support a canvas or tarp to shade Nordestinos as they travel. Is that correct?
Have you seen "Saudade do futuro"? It's a good film about Nordestinos in São Paulo. They have it tough, and yet São Paulo exists largely through the backbreaking labor of the Nordestinos. It's said that many people seem to be always looking for someone to hate and blame for their problems.
