Mensagem: 

In the song "Twelve Days of Christmas", I found the following lines curious:

 

Six geese a-laying

Seven swams a-swimming

Eight maids a-milking

Ten lords a-leaping

 

Why is this "a-" used before the gerund verbs? Does it change the meaning somehow? Is it a shortening of something else?
