Assunto:  English as an international language

Mensagem:  I still have a hard time understanding why Brazilians in Brazil are so obsessed with learning English. I know that it is because, supposedly, some version of English is the 'world language'. But the vast majority of Brazilians, day-to-day or even month-to-month or year-to-year would have no need to speak English with anyone or for any reason.

I find that most Brazilians who come here to my part of the US, do not in fact have much interest in learning English even though they have an abundant opportunity to learn from native-speakers and even though becoming functional speakers would make a major difference in their incomes. A few have become very proficient and do well, but most of them are quite shy of English-speakers and embarrased to attempt speaking it. I guess these are a different sort from those in Brazil who think that learning English will change their lives dramatically.

I believe Brazil's major trading partner is China, não é? Wouldn't learning Chinese actually make more sense and be more useful for budding business-people? In Australia I believe many people in business must speak Chinese, as the Chinese are famous for not liking to learn English and do much business in Australia.  There are more Chinese-speakers than English-speakers in the world, and there will be increasingly more and fewer native English-speakers.

The future of the world and the environment lies with China.
