"Telecommuter" is a commuter who works over the Internet, telephone, fax, etc.  I did that for about 12 years.  For the first few years I lived about 10 km from the office.  For the last 10 years or so, I lived about 130 km from the office.

A "commuter" is much more than someone who travels to work by bus, car, train, etc.  He has to be going from one city to another.  If you lived in Niteroi and worked in Rio, I'd say you commuted to work.  If you lived in one part of São Paulo and caught a bus or the subway to another part, I wouldn't call you a commuter, just someone with rotten luck who needs to find a job closer to where he lives.
