Assunto:  Go through the motions

To do something without enthusiasm, without commitment.

Mary and Bill are married, but they are only going through the motions.  They are making no effort to understand one another, help each other, etc.  Their "marriage" will never last.

John says he's studying biology, but I think he's just going through the motions.  He goes to class, but I never see him studying.  He doesn't seem to care what kind of grades he gets on his exams and reports.  It's too bad.  He could have been a good biologist.
