Josi, I've never heard of anyone in the USA who did the work of a despachante.  In fact, I don't recall hearing an equivalent term anywhere outside of Brazil. 


The terms that others have given refer to very specialized areas of the business world.  (In Los Angeles, I took customs broker classes and knew several customs brokers.)  In Brazil despachantes routinely are involved in all kinds of bureaucracy.  I was surprised to learn that despachantes dealt with DETRAN problems until I ran into problems with DETRAN.  


It appears to be one of those terms that are unique and closely tied to culture.
