A useful principle having wide application but not intended to be strictly accurate or reliable in every situation.
A rule of thumb is very general. You have found it to be generally true, but it's not meant to be a strict rule. It's a guideline, something that can be used without a great deal of thinking, a truth that is usually true but you are aware that there can be exceptions to it. |
