Yes, most brasilians are probably not aware of the older sense of 'fast', having almost the opposite meaning from the more modern one.

"stuck fast" (unable to mave)

"hold it fast" (keep it in place)

"make it fast" (tie off firmly)


That's interesting Pat. If Dutch is anything to go by, fast (in Dutch : vast) is strongly, firmly. Very likely both vastly and fastly come from the same roots.
