Nem consigo imaginar uma confusão.

I'd rather go fishing than swimming. = would

I had rather go fishing than swimming. = ERRADO

I'd gone fishing. = had

I would gone fishing. = ERRADO

I'd like to see you tomorrow. = would

I had like to see you tomorrow.  = ERRADO

I'd needed to to see you yesterday. = had

I would needed to see you yesterday. = ERRADO

He asked if I'd stay with his mother. = would

He asked if I had stay with his mother. =  ERRADO

He asked if I'd stayed with his mother. = had

He asked if I would stayed with his mother. =  ERRADO

Poucas vezes vai começar uma frase com "I had...", mas segundo o contexto, é possível.  Por exemplo:

Carlos:  Why couldn't I find you at home yesterday?

Mike:    (You couldn't I find me at home yesterday because) I'd gone fishing.
