It's correct, I suppose, but stilted and strange-sounding in english. That is the problem with literal translation - sometimes it's ok, other times not.
Some more native-sounding options:
"a champion athlete on his home turf"
"leaving his native land with many victories"
"going (or venturing) out after many successes at home"
In english, "local scene" is usually in reference to nightclubs, music bands, etc.
