Ironically, most of the gas station attentands around here are brasilian. It is that kind of pervasive isolation from the main body of native-speakers that is their problem - they can do pretty much all of their day-to-day activities without needing hardly any english. But for what they really want to do, which is to work directly for american contractors (I am one of only two that I know of that speak Port.) as subcontractors, they need at least a modicum of proficiency in english. They won't get this in a few haphazard classes with me, of course, but it might open the way for them to feel comfortable enough to begin the attempt to speak english with natives - something they feel to timid to try presently. |
