A common theme in our replies to your post is the need to have a specialized vocabulary. It's not enough to speak both languages well; you need to know the jargon or special terms related to the translations. For example, an acquaintance in Mexico specialized in financial reports. A friend in the Washington, DC area has coordinated translations for years. He gets a translation contract with a printer, hires translators to work on the project, and then collects the money. Not a bad job. Much of the work he does is related to military manuals. One project I recall was the translation of maintenance manuals for boats used by the government of Bolivia. Quite by accident, I discovered that there was a need for translation of real estate contracts. I'll never forget being told, "It doesn't have to be good, but it does have to be fast."
