Mensagem:  I think we should not ignore that there TWO types of approaches concerning grammar and gramarians. We have the rulers (they try to enforce/dictate rules) and we have the "describers" (can I say that?), that is, the ones that describe the language/how it is used. I think that the rulers are kind of outdated, but the describing tendency is the one used nowadays by most of grammarians. I agree with current approaches that say that language is acquired based on a universal structure already existent in all of us (Chomsky's idea). What do grammarians/syntax people do? They try to understand this structure that is neither random nor incoherent. It can be explained by its usage (functionalist approach), by its structure (generative grammar), or by a mixture of them.
