Assunto:  Non -ly adverbs -- Have they gone extinct?

Mensagem:  I had to go to bartleby.com for that. "What 'ponderable difference,' wondered I, "the use of an adjective as an adverb would have over direct or indirect speech."

Webster's Third New Intnl Dictionary carries the following example containing fierce and scurrilous, both of which pass for or function as non-ly adverbs (having no -ly endings). For what adverbs seem worth, of fierce I had heard of, but not of scurrilous at all after that fashion.

"[...] replied with invectives fierce and scurrilous" --J.A.Froude

Would using both fiercely and scurrilously instead have made any difference at all?

Long story made short! Thank you.
