I agree with Pat. There a number of words in Portugues that are similar, almost equal, to others in English. We really have the cognates AND the false cognates. I believe that most of them come from Latin that is the language where Portuguese comes from and that &"lends&" some words to English (specially technical terms, for example, medicine).
Based on my experience, not all students can make the connections, not all of them are aware of the similarities. It is not so easy for them. So, not all of them benefit from the comparison. It seems to me that the problem comes from the pronunciation of the words. They can not detach the sound from the writing: just a guess.
