Mensagem:  Good insight, Maria. I stand corrected about the Port. construction. Definitely the two-part infinitive, implied or no, is not called for here. I believe the most correct version would be: 'was watching Jack at play' or 'was watching while Jack played'. 'was watching (while) jack plays' is confusing because the tense becomes unclear. I don't know what term of grammar 'play' is in this context, clearly it is indirect. Maybe it is some form of infinitive. It can be quite hard to tell about infinitives in english, because in a certain sense verbs can be thought of as infinitive without the word 'to', just a basic, most common form. Mrob knows more about this if he is still reading on this forum.
