Mensagem: | Tiago and José Roberto, thank you also. I´m sure linguistics can be helpful, I just never had the opportunity to study it. The English classes I had in elementary through high school were long ago when the traditional approach of grammar, vocabulary, sentence diagramming etc. was still in use. Same goes for my college Portuguese classes, 40 years ago. So I´ll leave the linguistic discussions to you guys and try to contribute where I can - vocabulary, colloquialisms, etc. I think studying Portuguese in the traditional way, especially the grammar, has stood me in good stead, but I will always speak with some degree of an accent - at least it's not too far off in western SP. And I'll tell you a secret about my articles: my Brazilian wife proofreads them. She always finds a few things that although not incorrect just sound a little bit off. Speaking (or writing) like a native is an elusive goal, but I have found it enjoyable to work toward it throughout most of my life. I applaud the efforts of all the participants on this forum towards the same goal. |
