Is the expression 'play uncle' the same as 'cry/say uncle' which means to give up a fight /  surrender / ask to stop something painful or unbearable? If so,  the sentence 'John and Mary are still playing uncle.' means that none of them have surrended/admitted they were wrong and want to become friends again?

Thanks in advance.
