The following Marcian presentation attempts to make up for what lack of knowledge and understanding of English he may have had for the last 800 years.
To compensate for (a deficiency) = to make up as in "Studied hard to make up his English exam. He failed it unfortunately" meaning "... [he] studied hard so as to correct (an omission or his previous neglect at studying his English lessons) or remove (a deficiency in his grammar researching, which deficiency has cost him successively failed exams.)"
"Márcio Farias tried to make up for his lying down on the job by working hard well beyond the typical 7 to 1800 hours for the remainder of the month. His boss fired him anyway."
