Mensagem:  Transcribing "university" with a "j" or an "i" is only a matter of convention. And there is no relevant difference between the two sounds. The differences you hear (or not) are mostly produced by the fact that "i" in "bid" is the nucleus of the syllable, whereas "i" in "university" the attack (meaning the position before the nucleus). This explains why some people will feel that there is a considerable difference between the two sounds and some others wil feel it is too subtle to be noticed.
