A few years ago, I asked a number of Americans, Canadians, Australians and New Zealanders that question. Australians generally insisted that “a couple of” can’t possibly be more than two or, at the most, that it would be acceptable for “two or three, but definitely not more”. Most native speakers find it odd to use “a couple of” for more than three.
