Assunto:  Why to learn the English language?

Mensagem:  Because it is the lingua franca of the modern world - commerce, science, aviation, etc., etc. This fact is independent of any value judgments or comparisons between languages for literary value, sonorousness, or cultural superiority or inferiority. English is the second most widely spoken language in the world. Chinese is the first, but few people other than the Chinese speak it, and the written form is much too complicated to function as a lingua franca. Spanish is third and would be better as a lingua franca because it is easier than English, but history passed it by. Next are two Indian languages, which not even all Indians speak. Then Russian and Protuguese are about equal. We know why Russian spread, and why it is no longer spreading. In the early era of exploration and colonialism, Portuguese was a lingua franca on the high seas, which are most of the earth's surface, because the Portuguese got to many places first, but today the vast majority of Portuguese speakers live in one country.
