to wad up - to crumple (up)


"To wrinkle" has a similar but different meaning.  Rarely used with paper, the word usually describes what happens to clothing or even human skin (such as the face) when actions cause wrinkles to appear. 

You have wrinkled your shirt.  Let me iron it for you.

His years of life in the desert wrinkled his face.
