How about "to opportunistically avail himself or herself of an ongoing or standing
journalistic investigagion, for example, and then publish or republish
it at length or will"?
Globo TV soap opera editors do just that. They "fazem um gancho" on the previous soap opera chapter to bring forth the next. They almost run out of alternatives. Or scripts.
By extension (or extensively), someone might have started using the expression in real life to "opportunistically avail himself or herself of an ongoing activity in pretty much the way someone would jump on the free-lunch band wagon and always expect to get away with it."
You guys can't blame me for writing at length or at will. Or for writing for so long.
