The best hamburgers are at "Just Burgers" about a block from the Moinhos Shopping. Inside Moinhos and also inside Bourbon Country there is an American sports bar (Joe and Leo's?) with excellent burgers. The entire area around Moinhos has terrific little restaurants.
Don't go to Carmen's Club or the Gruta Azul unless you have lots of money and someone to watch your back. Are you allergic to penicillin?
And those girls you see at night along Farrapos? Not all of them are girls. In fact, I'm not sure any of them are girls. Let us know the results of your research.
Try the Odeon for top quality films. Avoid the area on weekend nights unless you're into encounters of the third kind. The place fills up with guys a little light in their loafers. Most seem to be Gremios fans.
Get to know the street market at 7 de Setembro. It's very worthwhile. The "Brick" is an interesting place on Sundays. The hotter the weather, the shorter the shorts.
Taxis have numbers painted on the roofs. If someone gives you a hard time, write down the number and report them. Most cabbies are decent guys trying to support their families, but there are some dishonest ones out there. A way to make a driver stop is to grab his license, the one kept on the inside of the windshield on the passgenger side. Do that, and you will have his complete attention. You can buy a mapbook of the city at an "O Globo" bookstore. It's foolish to take a taxi unless you know how to read a map and know where you are being taken (or not being taken). Anything but an O Globo map is a waste of time. If it's dark, don't be a dummy; take a taxi.
Don't root for Gremio. It's well accepted that true men are Internacional fans. For God's sake, don't wear blue when you go to an Internacional game. Wear red. Better yet, but an Internacional shirt.
Oh, and have dinner at Walter's. I think it's in Auxiliadora. It has the best steaks at the best prices in Porto Alegre.
