Really? Doing such a thing would definitely get the attention of the listener. If someone said such a thing to me, it would be like getting hit on the thumb with a hammer. I'd get very curious about what the speaker was saying (or not saying).

Agreed. Very commonly used. It wouldn't raise an eyebrow.
