Depends on the level of students, I wonder if they could solve a crossword, give a review of a newspaper article, practice some listening (hear a music and sing along, obviously with the lyrics in hands).
There are plenty of activities we could assign to pupils.
In my class-days (not long ago), the teacher allow students fetch some CD of easy listening with musics such as "Hotel California", some of Mcartney, Beatles, etc.
There were days that some classmates (the slower) were stuck with grammar exercises or other thing, I (personnaly) took advantage of this time of lull to pose some questions (in written, usually) like the pronounces of tricky words like TREE, THREE and FREE. The teacher would not answer aloud aiming not disturb the laggind guy, so we had the best of two worlds; I learnt what were of my interest and the guy could finish your work.
See ya soon.
