Only improving what Dale said:
"go to school", gives an idea of routine, as if you went everyday to school. I mean, you omit the article when the place is being visited to its normal finality; "go to the school", gives us an idea of rare situations, which don't usually take place or even when It's being visited for another finality different from the usual one.
E.g.: My son goes to school everyday / My mother went to the school to talk with the principal about me.
