I assume it's pretty commom since not everybody has the same goals when learning a second language. Some of my professors at college, for instance, say they learned English just enough to read the scientific articles, essays and the like available. There are also people who just want to be able to comunicate..chit-chat in English....though they are kind of committed to it..they usually study English for the heck of it
On the other hand, we do meet some very gung ho, enthusiastic English students who go the extra mile to learn more..these people are sure to become well-versed at all the skills as they make a point mastering them all.
Anyway, even thou' you as a teacher should always help your students to achieve a good level of competence in English.. shouldn't you also, in the first place, consider their interests in the language before starting beating yourself up?
BTW..As vezes sempre vai crase : às vezes.......just for the record......:)
