The child's parents reprove or rebuke the child severely as most parents do from a vantage point or in or as though in authority.

Private Gurualdo got told off by the senior officer for leaving his outpost unattended. (Gurualdo received a severe, formal reprimand from his commanding officer for etc, etc.)

The senior officer, at his turn, got told off for wearing a sleeveless jacket all unbuttoned and for standing at attention with his pants down.
