Mensagem:  Francis is right. Usually, to hire is a verb and contract is a noun:

She was hired three years ago.
You must hire a lawyer.
They hired a firm of consultants to design the new system.

They signed a contract.
He made a contract with the supplier.
The offer has been accepted, subject to a contract.

The word contract can also be used as a verb, but this usage is not so common and, most of the times, the meaning is slightly different from the Portuguese verb "contratar".
