How 'bout "greasy spoon," a small especially cheap and usually more or less unsanitary restaurant or diner? The neighborhood in which I work harbors a diversity of cheap restaurants, some of which have more hungry flies per cubic centimeter than hungry patrons per square kilometer.
We call these "mosqueiros" (fly harbors). You'd naturally think of a greasy spoon as, or perhaps associate it to, any restaurant or lunch house not throwing out the water (nor the tub) in which everybody else's dirt plates get washed, the cook's dirt linen included. ;-)
Go figure. All the plates on a "Don't throw the baby out with the water" mandatory policy. You found me there... You didn't lose me there...
