Pat I´ve never traveled abroad but I have the certificate of proficiency from Michigan Universitity. I intend to take the British test (CAE) in a distant future.
Teaching ING requires some knowledge of the language. See the cases:
"I AM studyING" -- Means that you do something at a specific time.
"I AM visitING" my mother tomorow -- Means a "programmed" future
"CryING is important sometimes" -- When you introduce a sentence with a verb the ING form is used.
"I like fishING" -- This happens because the verb "like" permits both constructions ( I like to fish or I like fishing) with a "similar" meaning (depending on the verb, it can have different meanings).
"Stop smokING!" -- In this case the verb "stop" (among others) is always followed by verbs in the ING form.
"Have you thought about travelling?" -- In this case after prepositions the verb is used in the ING form.
And so on...
