When my son was small, he'd come to Costa Rica (from the USA) to visit cousins. He'd return to the USA with a Costa Rican accent. Back in the USA, however, he'd get lazy and not speak Spanish. Oh, he'd understand what was said to him, but he wouldn't reply in Spanish. A year or so later, he'd be back in Costa Rica and he'd have to speak Spanish if his cousins were going to understand him. Again he'd return home with a Costa Rican accent and a good command of the language. Back and forth, back and forth... He's in medical school in Costa Rica now, and his command of Spanish is clearly better than that of his non-Costa Rican classmates.
