Among archers, a "rover" is someone who practices by shooting at targets at unknown distances.  The targets are also called "rovers".  Years ago my son and I belonged to the Pasadena Roving Archers.  The club had standard targets at known distances, but it also had a series of targets at unknown distances along a trail.  One target could be at 15 meters, the second at 55 meters, the third at 20 meters, etc.  And often you had to shoot through a hole cut into the underbrush.  It was a lot of fun.
