Mensagem:      Dale, except that "down east" is the correct term for going towards maine along the new england coast. This because the prevailing wind is from the southwest, so if you are going northeast or east by sail you are traveling "downwind". Similarly, on the island where I live, the eastern end is called "down" island, and the western end is "up" island.
