Spot on Dale! Because I see many Brits playing bowls here and most of them wear some funny headgear I thought that was it.
The bowler hat was typically worn in the city of London but also by butlers and other high ranking servants.
It seems that originally the hat was not only to protect against branches overhead but also against blows over the head delivered by poachers , caught in the act.
