Assunto:  the strange case of 'had had'

Mensagem:  Caro Amigos,

There is a commonly encountered constructon in English - "had had"- used to reflect a further past tense within a past tense narrative; an example from a novel I am reading: "the carpenter and the captain had had to ponder deeply-" This construction has always struck me as redundant but actually it does give a slightly different sense from "had to ponder".

Eu estava speculando: tem um correspondendo construcao no Portugues? Poderia dizer: "eles tinham tinham pensar muito?"
