In Portuguese, American (in the US concept, not to get one confused) citizens are called "americanos" or "Estadunidenses".
Conversely, people that live in United States of America, call themselves "Americans".
As Dale said, it´s language. Nothing to do with emotions, or with people that would like the world was the other way, just to fit his wish or convenience.
Just like that verb conjugation: to be
In Brazil we say: você é....
In English-speaking countries they say: you are....(not
The ealier the student of English accept differences, the ealier he will be succesful in communicating. Just like everything else in life.
