Mall, I think we made the same observation. When evidence is used to mean proof, doesn't evidences sound Portuglish to you? Maybe I'm wrong (I frequently am), but when used to mean proof, I think it's singular, not plural. It's like conselhos; plural in Portuguese but singular in English.
