Mensagem:  When we burn a bridge, we do something that prevents us from going back to the past.

If you think in terms of an army advancing, the meaning will  become clear.  An army that burns  its bridges can only go forward, never retreating.

You get angry with your boyfriend.  You telephone his mother and call her a tramp and a slut. Do you think you will ever return to your boyfriend, or have you burned your bridges behind you?

The school where you teach tells you that they do not have a class for you next semeseter.  You get upset and start a fire in the office.   Do you think you will ever return to the school  to  teach, or have you burned your bridges behind you?
