It is true that there exists enormous disparity of wealth in the USA; from the poorest to the richest is as large a gap as any third world country. The big difference as you point out is that most Americans have far more than the masses in other countries, even though a minority have far more. A larger minority have less, but not as much less.
The causes for this are complex, more so than in poorer countries I think, where it is a simpler case of a tiny aristocracy vs. a huge ethnicly homogeneous peasantry. However, any part modes of speech might play is fairly minor- at least within the standard speech group: white American. But for members of the Black and Hispanic groups, changing thier speech pattern to the norm is essential for success; make all the political or societal judgements about it you want, it is still a reality.
For those persons, and whites with very strong regional accents, to speak what has come to be accepted as standard English is important, and if they can speak more "correctly" than most Americans, so much the better. Why not? Why does it bother you?
