Mensagem:  Porque não, Veggie-san?  Pessoas, livros, saladas, tigres, árvores, empregos, casas, times de futebol, sogras...

Uma diferença que encontro e que soa um pouco esquisito usar um verbo com "to make do with".
(1) We will have to settle for going to Peru next month instead of this week. = soa natural
(2) We will have to make do with going to Peru next month instead of this week. = soa estranho
É uma coisa pessoal, meu jeito de falar?  E aceito por outros nativos tambem?  Sei la.

Outra diferencinha e que, quando se fala de outras pessoas, "to make do" soa mais natural do que "to settle for".  Por exemplo:
(1a) We do not have three rooms for the guests. We will have to make do with only two.
(1b) They will have to settle for only two/They will have to make do with only two.
( "We will have to settle for only two" não soa bem.  Porém, "They will have to settle for only two" e "They will have to make do with only two" soam naturais.)
(2a) They did not have three rooms for us.  They had to make do with only two.
(2b) We will have to settle for only two/We will have to make do with only two.
("They had to settle for only two" não faz sentido.  As outras tres frases soam naturais.)
