Actually, Wauber, the name comes from El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Angeles del Río de Porciúncula. California came from the name of an island mentioned in a novel. For decades California was believed to be an island. Ships went up the Sea of Cortez and sailors saw land on both sides, turning back before reaching the point where the peninsula begins. What I was getting at is that there are hundreds, if not thousands, of cities (and even states and counties) with foreign names in the USA that have NOT been changed. |
