Assunto:  get the better of somebody...

"they will get the better of you", this is so strange!


Longman says:

get the better of =>

   a) if your feelings are or wishes get the better of you, they make you in a way you would not normally behave.  

    as in: My curiosity got the better of me and I opened the letter.

               I think her nerves got the better of her.


See? a curiosidade a venceu, take out the better of her...etc




   b)to defeat someone or deal succesfuly with a problem.


I couldn´t think one example to that one, it took the better of me.

Sim, a definição saiu ganhando/me pegou/me venceu. 



    The  a)  is more commom in usage.
