Mensagem:  Engrenagem is gear, right?

To shift gears is to change gears.  It can also mean to make a dramatic change.  (He was a plumber, but he shifted gears, went back to college, and now he is a college professor.)

To shift up a gear is to move from a lower gear to a higher gear, right?  And when you do that, what happens to the car?  It moves faster, of course.  "To shift up a gear" can also mean to increase effort, work harder, focus, concentrate, etc.
