The word being discussed in the topic is indeed a swear word.

 

Just as a curiosity the word bitch can also mean "vi ado" when a man calls another man "bi tch" he's actually calling the guy "vi ado".

 

As for dogs people have dogs (male and female ones).

 

For example someone will show you a picture of his/her dog and could most likely say something such as "look, this is my dog, she's so cute".

 

These days people just use he or she dor their dogs instead of pronoun "it" like we were taught in the brazilian 5th grade.
