Mensagem: | Miguel, It is unfortunate and regrettable that you had that experience of mis-guided people critcising you in your attempts to learn Portuguese. I see now why you feel bitter about the concept of "correct" usage. However, I do believe that we need a standard of correct speech in any language, otherwise meaning would eventually become hopeless. It is true that "correct" speech often becomes an issue of who is better than whom, because often the language has been forced on another group, but there isn't any way to change that so many years later. Yet, consider this fact: The Norman French conquered the Saxons in England, and did their best to conquer the Saxon language- but the opposite happened- their French was conquered by Saxon speech! Today, Modern English speakers make the majority of their speech (70-90%, I think) from Anglo-Saxon roots. A proposito, quem eh Camoes? |
